General Information About AWUG:

Who or what is AWUG?
Formed in 1991, the AppleWorks Users Group, AWUG is an independent support group with thousands of members in the United States and 51 other countries all dedicated to helping AppleWorks and ClarisWorks users. Join now and enjoy the benefits shared by your AppleWorks colleagues.

Can I get technical help with a AppleWorks problem from AWUG?
AWUG maintains a list of volunteers called "Members Helping Members." These volunteers provide technical support for their AppleWorks colleagues.

What does MHM stand for?
It's an acronym for AWUG's "Members Helping Members" program. MHM volunteers provide free technical support for their AppleWorks colleagues.

Why is there no AWUG tech support via the web?
There are thousands of AWUG members. These numbers unfortunately make it impossible to provide individual technical support. You can address requests for technical support directly to one of AWUG's "Members Helping Members" volunteers. The newsgroup "comp.sys.mac.app" also promotes a network of AppleWorks experts offering help.

What is the Electronic Forum?
"AWUG's Electronic Forum" is a self-help system for the exchange of ideas among AppleWorks users. AWUG supports and monitors this service but does not provide answers to technical questions through this forum. AWUG members needing technical help should contact the appropriate "Members Helping Members" volunteers via telephone or email.

How do I read messages?
Click the underlined text in any of the message summaries.

How do I reply to a message?
From the list of message summaries click the message you would like to reply to. The complete text of the message will be displayed for you. At the end of the message you will see two buttons "Reply to Message" and "Create New Message." Click the "Reply to Message" button. A new page will be displayed in your browser's window that contains several boxes for text. Type your name in the "From:" box and your E-mail address in the "E-mail:" box. The "Subject:" box will already have the message subject filled in for you. The "Message:" box will contain a copy of the message that you are replying to. This feature makes it easier for everyone reading your message to follow the train of thought. You should HEAVILY edit this quoted text so that you quote only what's essential to establish the context of your message. When you finish click the "Save Message" button.

How do I save a message?
To save a message you must fill in the "From" and "Subject" fields. (The "Email" field is optional but makes it easier for people to contact you directly.) When you have filled in each field to your satisfaction click the "Save Message" button.

What is all this junk in the "Message" field when I click the "Reply to This Message" button?
The "Junk" is a quoted copy of the message that you are replying to. This feature makes it easier for everyone reading your message to follow the train of thought. You should HEAVILY edit this quoted text so that you quote only what's essential to establish the context of your message.

How do I leave a message for others to read?
Click the "Create a New Message" if you would like to leave a new message that does not relate to another message already posted to "AWUG's Electronic Forum." If you want to leave a message that is a reply to a message that is already posted then you can click the "Reply to Message" button. However, you will first have to read the message you want to reply to.

How do I send email to someone that left a message?
You can only send email to those people that supplied their email address when they created their message. You will see an underlined email address next to their name in the "From" field if this is the case. Click the email address and you will be able to send email directly to them. Anything you send via email will not appear on "AWUG's Electronic Forum."

What is this thing called the Internet?

What is a web browser?
A WWW client whose main purpose is to facilitate an individual's use of the World Wide Web. The most popular web browsers are currently Netscape and Internet Explorer.

A very popular web browser that can also perform other client duties such as FTP and email.

MicroSoft's web browser.

What is Claris Emailer?
Claris Corporation's e-mail client software. It allows you to send and receive email through the Internet.

What is Eudora?
A very popular e-mail client package by Qualcomm, Inc. It allows you to send and receive e-mail through the Internet.

What is FTP?
An acronym for File Transfer Protocol. The term is generally used synonymously with downloading via the Internet.

What is an FTP client?
A software application that uses FTP to upload and download data from your computer to a server on the Internet. Two very popular Macintosh FTP clients are Fetch and Anarchie.

What does Anonymous FTP mean?
As applied to an FTP server anonymous means the server is set up so anyone with Internet access can download files from it. Good netetiquette demands the use of a name and password when doing FTP on the Internet. Most Anonymous FTP servers require that you enter a name of "anonymous" and your e-mail address as a password before granting access.
