data mining... sort of.

I am working on a project that involves taking large text files and extracting a particular string of data. I can, using find/repalace, insert unique characters at the beginning and end of each string of data, but the length of the string will vary and is unpredictable. I want to pull the data strings "out" of one AppleWorks file and deposit the strings of data into another.
Is there a way, using apple script and the functions in AppleWorks, to build an automated system of extracting the data?
