Placing an image behind a Numbers table

Postby GBAmend » Fri Nov 18, 2011 2:39 pm

I need a hint in how to place an image behind a table where the table is functioning but the image is visible. The goal is to place an image of the solar system on screen and when a student rolls over a cell in front of a planet the comment section will pop-up and give the planet name and information.

Interesting idea!

Start with a Plain table (no header rows, no header columns. Resize the rows and columns to produce a grid of cells of the density you need in order to place the markers to the precision you want.

Paste the image as a floating object. With the object selected, Drag the object over the table. Drop when the top and left alignment guides indicate the image and the top left corner of the table are aligned. Go Arrange > Send to Back.

The image will disappear behind the table.

Click the Table's icon in the Sheets list to select the table.

In the format bar, click the Fill Color Well and choose None (top left cell on the palette).
The image will reappear, with the table's grid lines superimposed.

Enter comments in the appropriate cells, and hide each by clicking the yellow marker triangle in its cell.

When all comments are entered, again select the Table by clicking its icon in the Sheets list.

Click the Line Color Well (immediately left of the Fill well), and again select None. The grid lines will disappear.

To use the 'appear on hover' feature, students will have to click on any cell of the table to activate it. After that a comment will appear when the mouse pointed is placed over its marker.

Regards,
Barry

PS: One remaining issue is that of protecting the document from accidental changes. Locking the table will do that, but will also prevent selecting a cell, necessary to activate the table and the 'appear on hover' feature.

Add or delete rows and columns (and/or resize the image) to make the table size match the size of the image.
