Number field in database

I have a weaving inventory DB which has a field for the warp number which should go consecutively (1 2 3 4 etc.) When set as a number field it goes from 1 to 10, 10 to 109, 11 to 119 etc. I tried to redefine the field to serial number but I must be doing something wrong because it doesn't change it. Check your intended numeric fields using the Define Fields dialog once more. The order you are observing occurs when you sort on a field that is defined as Text.

I assume your first sentence means that when the records are sorted on this field they are sorted alphabetically (1, 10, 101...109, 11, 110,etc.) rather than numerically (1, 2, 3, 4...9, 10, 11...19, 20, etc.).

I could duplicate this (with a 500 record DB containing only the single field, whic held the numbers from 1 to 500) only by defining the field as a Text type field. When I changed it to a Number type field, it sorted in numerical order.

Thanks, Haumann and Barry, The word "sort" brought me to my senses. I had forgotten to do that.
