When I try to rotte text in a drawing document, I lose the text even though the handles are still there. Is there anyway that I can keep the text visible while I work on the rotating?

Unfortunately, no...

But there is an alternative: from the Options menu, select "Object Size...". This will open a utility palette that includes an input window for rotation angle. The display makes a trial-and-error solution to get just the right amount of rotation, much easier.
