Annoying spinning disc every five minutes

Dear All,

I'm using the AppleWorks 6 word processing program to write up an interview, and every five minutes I get the annoying spinning silver disc of doom. Worryingly, it seems to take longer to go away every time it happens. Am I being stupid or what? I'm not looking forward to doing this in text edit.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Thank you all for your help. I knew I was being dim. I've taken your advice and sorted out my recent items / auto save and am now spinning disc free. What a helpful forum! Bless you all.
