AW Spreadsheets

Postby sfinnegan » Thu Jul 12, 2007 6:40 pm

I am interested in setting up a spreadsheet, so that i can calculate VAT ( Value Added Tax) on my purchases.

Is there any good books or web sites on this subject.

Any help or advice would be appreciated

Not on this particular subject.

AppleWorks 6: The Missing manual and AppleWorks for Dummies have received ecommendations as general manuals.

You can also download the AppleWorks 5 User manual from Apple's website. For most purposes what's described there will work as well in AW 6.

A spreadsheet to calculate VAT is pretty easy to set up.

In Row 1, Enter these headings (some may be unnecessary to your purpose) in cloumns A through E:

Date, Item, Price, VAT, Total

In cell D2 enter =IF(C2,C2*0.15,"")
In cell E2 enter =IF(C2,C2+D2,"")

Select the block of cells C2..E21 (for a 20 item list)
Press command-D to fill the formulas Down the columns
Press shift-command-N to open the Number format dialogue.
in the dialogue, click Fixed, leave Precision at the default 2, and click OK.

Enter the price of each item in a cell in column C. The VAT will be calculated and displayed in column D, and the price including VAT in column E. The formula in D1 (and trhe rest of the cells in column D) assumes a VAT rate of 15%. If necessary, change "0.15" to reflect the actual rate.

Regards,
Barry

Note: Cells references in formulas revised July 13 to allow for headings in Row 1.

Hello Barry, and other AWgurus!
I often think that when a newbie has built the fine SS that you have advised, and they go to fill it with data, then they inadvertedly..?.. enter some data in a formula cell.
I think you maybe could at the same time show how to protect all formulacells?

Good point, Gunnar. In the spreadsheet described above, after Filling the formulas into the D2..E21 block, and while these cells are still selected, go to the Options menu and choose Lock Cells.
