I start Appleworks ok. Then start a new database. create a field. Then when I enter a character in the field appleworks crashes. Same thing happens when I start a word document. (Spreadsheets work okay)

Welcome to AWUG

Check to make sure you don't have an Extended keyboard layout enabled. This is a Unicode layout & AppleWorks can't handle Unicode. Go to System Preferences > International > Input Menu & uncheck the US Extended keyboard layout. I have found that I can have it checked in the Input Menu, but I keep it unchecked under the flag in the menu bar when I am using AppleWorks. This lets me choose it for text entry into a Pages or TextEdit document. These programs, and there may be others, do support Unicode.

Thanks. That did it. (Now I recall showing how one can change the keyboard for foreign languages, and did not reset it properly)

Thanks
